Background
Ficus Landscape Group was selected for this prestigious project at Chadstone Shopping Centre due to our longstanding reputation for delivering high-quality service and landscaping solutions. The goal was to preserve the existing formality of the landscape while seamlessly integrating a modern design that would complement the high-end nature of the facility. The project was driven by the vision to enhance the shopping centre’s aesthetic appeal, provide an inviting and eco-friendly environment, and elevate the overall visitor experience.
Landscaping Features
The landscaping scope of work for the project included both outdoor and indoor gardens, each featuring a diverse range of carefully selected plants, shrubs, and trees. The design aimed to achieve a balance between formal, sophisticated landscaping elements and modern, sustainable features that reflect the prestige of Chadstone Shopping Centre.

The gardens contribute significantly to Chadstone’s commitment to sustainability. The landscaping elements support the shopping centre’s aim of achieving a Zero Carbon Certification, enhancing the eco-friendly credentials of the entire project. The inclusion of native plants and sustainable practices like water-wise irrigation systems and the use of organic fertilizers not only enhances the visual appeal of the space but also reinforces the centre’s dedication to environmental responsibility.
Challenges and Solutions
While the project was a success, it came with its set of challenges that required careful planning, expertise, and resourcefulness.
1. Working Around the Public:
One of the primary challenges was ensuring the safety of both the public and our workers while the construction was ongoing. Given the high foot traffic at Chadstone Shopping Centre, it was crucial to maintain a clean and safe working environment at all times. Ficus Landscape Group implemented stringent safety protocols, including barriers, signage, and designated work areas, ensuring minimal disruption to visitors while maintaining a high standard of safety for the team. We’re proud to report that the project was completed with an exemplary safety record.
2. Craning Tree for Indoor Space:
Installing large, mature trees indoors posed a unique challenge. The trees needed to be carefully craned into position, a process that required meticulous planning and coordination. The installation of these tall trees required precise handling to avoid any damage, both to the trees and the surrounding environment. Ficus Landscape Group employed professional operators and worked closely with the landscape architect to ensure the tree were placed in optimal locations for their health and growth. This careful approach contributed to the successful establishment of the trees within the indoor garden spaces, where they continue to thrive and contribute to the space’s eco-friendly ambiance.
